Flights Orchard is a small 4 acre orchard (pictured in the sunrise above) with some tunnels, the barn and the farm house. Over the road is a 22 acre field with a view of Marcle Ridge to the west and May Hill to the south.
The field is diverse; organic since my parents took it on in 1991 with a large pond (left) built as a reservoir for irrigation water. Holding water in the land like this is one of the very best things that can be done to create habitat and attract a wider range of wildlife - and it really is abundant.

Utilising trees as part of a farming system in any and all ways is termed 'agroforestry'. Their benefits are vast and multi-layered and we're still discovering more. Here in this field we have just planted over 4000 trees as shelter belts (left) for protection against wind and an additional crop (a wide range of fruit which will increase our offering when the trees mature.) They also provide many other farm-wide benefits by creating habitat and increasing biodiversity in the cropping areas. This is ancient knowledge, forgotten in the rush to industrialise food production.
